A man who thought he was stopping to help a stranger in distress had his car stolen in New Westminster last week, according to authorities.

The victim called 911 on April 10 to report the theft, which happened when he pulled over on Ewan Street, the New Westminster Police Department said in a media release Monday.

“He saw a pedestrian who was waving his arms. Believing the pedestrian was in some need of assistance, the driver pulled over and exited his vehicle. The caller shared that was when the pedestrian ran to his vehicle, and drove away,” police said.

The vehicle was found abandoned soon after, and an investigation was launched. The suspect is described as “South Asian in appearance” and was wearing a black long-sleeved shirt at the time.

“This individual took advantage of that kindness, and we’re urging anyone with information to come forward immediately,” New Westminster Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Andrew Leaver said.

Anyone who thinks they can assist investigators is urged to call 604-525-5411 and quote file 25-5904.
