Nearly a year after a missing man was found dead on a Vancouver Island highway, a charge has been laid in the case, according to authorities. Mahadi Redwan, 23, was the subject of an appeal for information by the Nanaimo RCMP in early November of 2025 after he was reported missing. Mounties found his body later that month near Highway 19A between Turner and Mostar roads, a previous statement from the detachment said. In a statement Tuesday, police said Redwan was allegedly struck and killed by a driver. Wael Hmaied has been charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death and turned himself in on Monday, according to the Nanaimo RCMP. “This outcome was made possible through the dedicated efforts of front-line officers, specialized investigative units, and civilian staff whose collective work helped advance the investigation and bring it before the courts,” the statement from Mounties said. Hmaied has been released from custody and is next due in court on Nov. 10.
