Out-of-control wildfire burns on Vancouver Island as crews mount major response

A human-caused wildfire is burning out of control on Mount Prevost near Duncan B.C.

An out-of-control wildfire burning on Mount Prevost near Duncan, B.C., is drawing a major response from firefighters as hot, windy weather is expected to contribute to the fire’s growth.

The wildfire, designated V60767, was discovered Monday on the west side of the mountain. The BC Wildfire Service estimates the fire is about two hectares and says it is expected to spread beyond its current perimeter.

The BC Wildfire Service has deployed three initial attack crews, two helicopters, two water tenders, one wildfire resource officer and additional air tanker support to battle the blaze. In a social media post, the Municipality of North Cowichan said its fire department is also assisting at the scene.

The wildfire is suspected to be human caused, though officials have not said how it started.

No evacuation orders, evacuation alerts or area restrictions have been issued.

Mount Prevost is a popular destination for hikers, mountain bikers and other outdoor enthusiasts. Authorities are asking people to stay away from the area while firefighting operations continue.
