Victoria animal rescuer returns to Ukraine frontline to save goats from war zone

A Vancouver Island rescuer known for helping animals trapped in some of the world’s most dangerous conflict zones is once again on the frontlines in Ukraine.

A video posted to social media by RainCoast Animal Rescue shows a team of armed soldiers and rescuers helping evacuate several goats from an area near active fighting in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region.

The footage highlights the ongoing risks faced not only by civilians caught in the conflict, but also by animals left behind as fighting continues.

In the video, Victoria-area rescuer Jesse Adams explains the mission and his motivation for taking part.

“All animals matter. A life is a life,” Adams says in the video, filmed during the rescue operation.

Adams and his brother have spent years helping animals caught in war zones around the world, carrying out rescue missions in some of the most dangerous regions affected by conflict.

While dogs and cats have traditionally been the focus of RainCoast’s efforts, the organization has also assisted in rescuing larger animals affected by war. Previous missions have included helping evacuate big cats stranded in conflict zones in Ukraine.

Founded in 2014, RainCoast Animal Rescue is a volunteer-run Canadian charity based in the Victoria area. The organization has partnered with international animal welfare groups to help rescue and relocate hundreds of animals from regions impacted by war, including Afghanistan and Ukraine.

The latest mission serves as another reminder that the effects of war extend beyond people. For rescuers working in dangerous conditions, saving vulnerable animals remains a priority, even in the midst of active conflict.

The rescued goats have since been moved away from the immediate danger zone, according to the organization.
