What’s in your bin? CRD launches detailed waste audit across Vancouver Island communities

If your bins are being handled a little differently over the coming months, there’s a reason for it, and it’s not because you’ve done anything wrong.

The Capital Regional District is rolling out a broad waste audit this summer, sampling what residents and businesses are putting in their garbage, recycling and compost carts as part of a region-wide effort to better understand disposal habits.

From June through October, contractors working on behalf of the CRD will be collecting and sorting random waste loads from a mix of homes, apartment buildings, schools and commercial sites across the region. The work is being carried out by environmental consultants with Tetra Tech.

Officials say the goal isn’t to single anyone out or check for mistakes at the curb. Instead, it’s a snapshot of what’s ending up in the waste stream, the good, the bad and the compostable.

To keep the data accurate, residents won’t be told when their neighbourhood is part of the sampling schedule. Waste will be picked up alongside regular collection, though some households may notice different trucks or slight changes in timing on collection days.

The CRD says the process is strictly anonymous. Materials will be weighed and categorized but not traced back to individual addresses. Any personal items or information that is accidentally collected will be securely destroyed.

The findings will feed into future decisions on recycling and organics programs, helping the region fine-tune how it handles waste and where there may be opportunities to divert more from the landfill.

For now, the message from the CRD is simple: carry on as usual, just don’t be surprised if someone ends up taking a closer look at what’s in your bin.
