A small Chatham construction company has been fined $85,000 in the death of one of its workers in 2022.
According to the Ministry of Labour, a worker was killed while cutting down a tree. It said the employer, John Harris Concrete Ltd., failed to give proper training to the worker.
The worker was clearing brush and felling trees from an area around a drainage ditch on Gould Road in the Township of Dawn-Euphemia in Lambton County.
Through an investigation, the Ministry of Labour learned that while the employee was trained on chainsaw safety and operation, they weren’t trained on tree felling.
The case was heard in the Provincial Offences Court in Sarnia, where the company pled guilty.
