Seniors are being warned of a phone scam circulating in Chatham-Kent.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service said they received a report of the calls on Friday, which includes fraudulent requests for donations, allegedly on behalf of local firefighters.
A senior resident in the municipality reported the suspicious call from an unknown man asking for the donation. No specific fire department was provided and verifiable information was not given.
The CKPS said the victim didn’t share any personal details, deciding to call Chatham-Kent Fire Service. The fire station confirmed the fundraiser was not legitimate.
Police is now urging all residents, especially seniors, to never give any personal or financial information out over the phone to unknown people.
If you are in doubt, hang up and call the organization the caller claimed to be directly. If you get a similar call, you are asked to report it to the CKPS at 519-352-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
