Essex residents warned of attempted fraud

The Essex County OPP is warning the community of attempted fraud in Harrow.

On Jan. 10, police were called regarding a suspected fraud attempt. It was reported the resident got a call from an unknown person, who claimed to be from the Ontario Rebate Office, wanting to schedule an appointment to conduct an energy audit.

According to OPP, the caller said they would come to the residence and check the interior and look at their utility bills. Afterwards, they would let the resident know if they qualify for a monthly rebate and would apply it on their behalf.

In a news release, police said the suspect would give a confirmation number to make the transaction look more realistic.

Community members are reminded to be very careful when letting strangers into your home. Take time to properly research the business the person claims to be from and don’t make quick decisions, even if a good deal seems to be on the line.

Police said if you ever feel pressured, hang up the phone or delete the profile of the sender. Never give out personal information.

Essex OPP offered the following tips for consumers:

If a company claims that an energy assessment or home inspection is required to apply or qualify for the COVID-19 Energy Assistance Program (CEAP), Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP) or Low-income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP), this is false

You should be cautious about sharing your personal information or utility account information with anyone

Know who you are dealing with. If someone calls you, ask for the name of the person you are speaking with, the company they represent and their phone number
