A farmer’s market in Kingsville, Ont. has made a significant change recently - shoppers at Lee and Maria’s Farmers’ Market will no longer find any products that are made or manufactured in the USA.
It’s a move that illustrates the company’s stand against U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to Canadian sovereignty and his tariff assault against Canadians and the nation’s economy.
The market began as a roadside stand by Lee and Maria Mastronardi in the early 80s. It is now owned and operated by their three children – Jennifer, Kathy and Michael.
The family has roots in both Canada and the U.S., however, right now Canada comes first in all respects.
Patrons who visit the market in person or online to order (for direct-to-home delivery) – will only see fresh local Canadian produce along with a few international selections to fill in the gaps where formerly American imports would suffice.

For co-owner Kathy Mastronardi-Black, this is a time for all Canadians to stand proud and strong together.
“So, we would always supplement with a U.S. product when we could - they are our neighbors,” said Mastronardi-Black. “We’ve always had a great relationship. We always got good product from them. But, in light of what’s happening right now in the world, we feel pretty strongly that we need to support Canada as Canadians, as a whole, our community, our region.”
The family-run business is close-knit and this extends into the community, now into it’s third generation.
Mastronardi-Black and her family are appreciative of the market’s ongoing support from patrons in the community over 35 years. Moreover, the company is dedicated to showcasing, partnering, and supporting Canadian producers and businesses.
“Canada’s always been proud, but in light of everything happening, it’s almost put a fire under us. I think, to really appreciate who we are and what we do and what we are capable of doing. We are capable of doing everything we want to do, and if we put our mind to it, we will make it work,” said Mastronardi-Black.
