As the weather begins to get warmer, many will start pulling out their barbeques for the season.
Local fire departments and the Ontario Fire Marshal are working to educate the public to stay safe and prevent unnecessary fires.
When you are barbequing, you are reminded to always stay out in the open. Never grill in a garage, tent, or enclosed space.
It is also recommended that you put your barbeque away from wooden fences, walls, or anything else flammable that could ignite. Canada’s website recommends putting it at least three metres away from anything flammable.
Other tips from the federal government include:
- Make sure your grill is located on a flat, level surface
- Keep your barbeque away from paths of travel and play areas
- Use long-handled utensils to keep a safe distance from the heat and flames
- Keep your kids and pets away from the barbeque
- Make sure your barbeque is completely cooled before covering or storing it
- Have a portable residential fire extinguisher nearby when possible
