Residents in secondary zone able to pick up KI pills

Windsor residents living in the secondary zone can now pick up their Potassium Iodide (KI) pills.

The secondary zone is 80 kilometres from the Enrico Fermi 2 Generating Station. The pills are provided by the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) to prepare the city in the event of a nuclear emergency.

If you have these pills that you picked up earlier, WECHU said they are expiring soon.

To pick up your new ones, you can go to the following places on the following dates:

- Mackenzie Hall – Main Gallery: Feb. 25 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

- Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex – Red Maple Room: March 5 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

- Gino and Liz Marcus Community Complex – Drouillard Room: March 11 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

- Forest Glade Community Centre – Wildwood Room: March 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Once you pick up your new KI pills, you can throw out your expired ones or take them to the pharmacy for proper disposal.

According to WECHU, the KI pills block the thyroid from absorbing radioactive iodine, which could be released in a nuclear incident. They are only to be taken when directed to do so by WECHU’s Medical Officer of Health.

The risk level at Fermi 2 has not changed.
