Town of Essex declares Significant Weather Event ahead of expected storm

The Town of Essex has declared a Significant Weather Event ahead of Wednesday’s anticipated storm.

The town’s declaration is set to begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

“We are closely monitoring the incoming snowstorm and taking proactive steps to ensure the safety and efficiency of our snow removal operations,” said Kevin Girard, director of infrastructure services.

“The declaration of a Significant Weather Event is essential due to the expected heavy snowfall and high potential for icy conditions, with snow accumulations potentially reaching up to 15 centimetres.”

Residents of Essex are asked by the town to do the following to help snow clearing efforts:

Park vehicles off the street when possible and avoid parking vehicles on the sidewalk. This will allow winter maintenance equipment to efficiently clear snow from roadways. Emergency service vehicles rely on clear roads to respond quickly to emergencies.

When clearing driveways and sidewalks, residents are asked to shovel snow onto lawns, not onto the road.

Decorative items positioned near sidewalks and curbs should be flush with the ground and at least 12 inches away from the edge of sidewalks and curbs. The town is not responsible for damage to decorative items in the road allowance.

“As a community, we must all come together to ensure safe road conditions during this Significant Weather Event,” said Mayor Sherry Bondy.

“The expected snowfall will create challenges, but with cooperation from residents, we can minimize disruptions. I urge everyone to follow the guidelines provided, stay informed, and be cautious when travelling.”

The Special Weather Event will stay in effect until roads are deemed safe for travel.
