Ward 9 city councillor Kieran McKenzie has a big night this weekend as he plans to tackle this weekend at the LaSalle Event Centre.
McKenzie is entering the ring for a tag team match as the main event at NCG’s Ain’t Easy wrestling show starting at 7 p.m.
“I think I’m prepared to get in the ring with some of these really talented athletes,” McKenzie told CTV News.
“But I’m there to make my point. We’ll see what happens. I’m under no illusions about what I’m up against, but I’m prepared to stand my ground.”
McKenzie has been training for the last month at an undisclosed warehouse in the county. Last summer, he entered the ring during a show in Leamington, was jumped, and forced to sign a document for local wrestling legend Irish Bobby Clancy, before being rescued by security.
If McKenzie wins, he’ll regain the title of NCG manager, but he has to get in the ring with some big wrestlers, including 7-feet tall, 320 pounder Jack Tallos.
NCG commentator Drake D’Amore said he has not called a match with someone as green as McKenzie.
“I have no idea what he’s thinking, why he got himself involved in this, why he wants to even be the GM of NCG, but I appreciate the bravery and the courage.”
One of McKenzie’s tag team partners, wrestling veteran Mike Legacy, said he feels the councillor is ready to stand his ground.
“He’s done really, really well,” Legacy said.
“He’s, luckily, very athletic and he’s caught on quite a bit over the last few weeks here.”
McKenzie believes he will be able to settle the dispute with Clancey once and for all in the ring.
