Windsor-Essex Hall of Famer Denise Hebert remembered for lasting impact on students and athletes

The Windsor sports community is mourning the passing of Denise Hebert, a longtime coach at the University of Windsor

The Windsor-Essex community is mourning the loss of a coach, teacher, friend, and beloved family member.

Denise Hebert passed away Monday, leaving many across Windsor-Essex in shock and saddened. She was 62 years old.

Tributes have been pouring in online, with former students, athletes, colleagues, and friends sharing memories of a woman who made a lasting impact both inside the classroom and on the field.

Hebert dedicated her life to education and sport, touching countless lives through her passion for teaching and coaching. Her accomplishments were many, including her induction into the Windsor-Essex County Sports Hall of Fame in 2023 — an honour that reflected her decades of commitment to athletics in the region.

Beyond the accolades, those who knew her say Denise was first and foremost a mentor.

She guided students in the classroom as an educator and helped develop athletes as a throws coach at the University of Windsor. But for Denise, it was never about recognition.

It was about the students, the kids, and the people she knew.

Friends and former athletes say she relished every moment, win or lose, and had a unique ability to make everyone feel seen and supported. Her passion, kindness, and genuine care left a lasting impression on all who crossed her path.

The University of Windsor is honouring her memory during its annual Team Challenge this weekend. The meet will now begin at 2 p.m. instead of 11 a.m., allowing members of the community to attend her funeral.

The Lancers will also hold moments of silence on Saturday in memory of Hebert, and Friday night to honour former pole vault coach Greg McCullough, who recently passed away as well.
