The heat retreats and a multi-day heavy rain event is on the horizon for most of Alberta. Much of the province is under a weather statement regarding the potential for 50 to 100+ millimetres of rain starting this weekend and continuing through Tuesday/Wednesday of next week. A deep area of low pressure will develop over southern parts of Alberta through the weekend and that system will get “stuck” in place for a few days. After several days of heat and highs in the upper 20s and low 30s across Alberta, temperatures will drop to the 10 to 15 C range in central and southern Alberta with gusty conditions accompanying the heavy rain. There’s still some uncertainty with exactly where the heaviest (100+ mm) pockets of rain will develop, but localized flooding is a possibility in some of those harder-hit areas. Rain will start Saturday night in southern Alberta and will move into the Edmonton region late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. The map below is an estimate of the total rainfall (up to Monday morning) across the province. Keep in mind: There will be more rain that falls through the day Monday and in many areas, rain will continue through Tuesday. The heaviest of the rain for most areas should be done by early Tuesday. In Edmonton and area: 60 to 100 mm of rain is likely to fall Sunday/Monday/Tuesday. The bulk of that rain should fall through the day Sunday and into the first half of the day Monday.
