Windsor police officer donates hair for wigs for cancer patients

A Windsor police officer cut her hair for cancer and to be made into wigs. The one who cut her hair was a local student with cancer.

A special event took place in support of those battling cancer in our community.

Before the first steps of today’s annual Terry Fox Walk at Assumption College Catholic High School – a powerful act of generosity set the tone.

Windsor police constable Keri Parent, the school’s community liaison officer, donated her hair to be made into wigs for cancer patients. Parent also is a graduate of the school, which made this extra special for her and her family.

“People are thinking of them [cancer patients] and we can do what?” asked Parent.

“We can only do what we can do to help them out and my way is to grow my hair and give that way.”

Adding to the emotion of the moment and holding the scissors was Grade 9 student Nathaniel Vubui. Nathaniel was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in Grade 8.

The Terry Fox Walk is held annually in schools across Canada to honour the legacy of Terry Fox, who inspired the nation with his Marathon of Hope and continues to be a symbol of resilience in the face of cancer.

So far, the Marathon of Hope and Terry Fox Foundation have raised $850 million dollars since 1980, money that goes to research for a cure for cancer.
