Military Museums in Calgary break out the tanks for Father’s Day

Visitors were given tours of a few Canadian tanks Sunday as part of the Military

Sunday marked a day for dad at the Military Museums.

The museum brought out some of their military equipment for Father’s Day including two tanks and gave tours of the vehicle to people of all ages -- with some expert guides, said Ryan Goldsworthy, the museum’s director.

“Service people with real experience real expertise, guiding visitors through the tanks & vehicles,” Goldsworthy said.

Inside the museum, historical and modern firearms were brought up from the vault for visitors to learn about and hold.

“For today only, visitors can touch and hold and speak to some of the experts and how they were used in the field all the way back to the First World War all the way to the present day. All the galleries are open as well, we have volunteers speaking to some of the special exhibits,” Goldsworthy said.

He said the museum wanted to have people physically interact with history.

“It’s important to physically connect with military history,” Goldsworthy said. “It’s one thing to read about it, to talk about it, but to have that tangible connection with the objects, not just behind glass in cases but to hold them with your hands, to touch them.”

Also included was a military genealogy tracing session and an obstacle course.
