Elite athletes and Olympians gathered in Windsor for the World Aquatics Diving World Cup on Wednesday.

The world’s best divers are in Windsor for a world-class competition this week.

From Thursday to Monday, Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre will host the World Aquatics Diving World Cup. It’s an international event presented by WFCU Credit Union and Speedo.

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens, Gordon Orr, CEO of Tourism Windsor-Essex Pelee Island, and Penny Joyce, Chief Operating Officer of Diving Plongeon Canada, were on hand to mark the official launch of the competition Wednesday afternoon.

Mayor Dilkens is enthusiastic about the event being held in the Rose City.

“It’s great for tourism, it’s great for economic development, it’s great for strengthening the core,” said Mayor Dilkens.

“But you know who it’s really good for? It’s good for all those young athletes who are part of the Windsor Diving Club, who get to interact with their athletic heroes, but also get to train and practice and develop their skills in a world class facility that one day they may be able to compete in their backyard in a pool against other Olympians here in the city of Windsor.”

Many Olympians who competed at the Paris 2024 Games comprise the 119 athletes from 24 nations at this meet – including nine Canadian athletes.

As a primer to the four days of competition, some of the divers were involved in practice sessions taking full advantage of the facility before the competition begins Thursday.

Fan interest is high as tickets for the 4 days are sold out.
