The City of Winnipeg is kicking off its spring cleaning blitz starting Sunday.

In a Friday release, the city said crews will sweep the entire street network over a six-week period to clean roadways, bridges, sidewalks, and other surfaces. Workers will also be cleaning up litter and debris in public parks during the operation.

The release notes active transportation routes are being prioritized to ensure they are ridable for cyclists and other users.

The city said temporary ‘no parking’ signage will pop up over the next six weeks and asks Winnipeg residents to avoid parking on their street during scheduled cleaning.

“We don’t put temporary ‘no parking’ signs everywhere but do install them on routes where we know parked cars would present challenges to crews,” the city cautioned. “Parking is illegal in these spots and vehicles parked in violation may receive a $150 ticket.”

The city states vehicles may also be towed to the towing company’s compound at the owner’s expense and adds tickets may be mailed rather than placed on vehicles.

The city notes ‘no parking’ signs won’t be placed on every route but asks motorists to park elsewhere while work is being completed.

The city encourages residents to visit its spring cleaning operations website and to download the Know Your Zone app to find out when their streets are being cleaned.

Residents are also asked not to rake yard waste material and other debris onto roadways as it can plug drains and cause other issues. This type of debris should be put out for regular garbage collection.

“This year’s curbside yard waste collection program will start the week of April 28 for homes in yard waste collection area ‘A,’ and the week of May 5 for homes in yard waste collection area ‘B,‘” the release said.

Compostable yard waste material like grass clippings and leaves can be placed in any reusable containers without a lid, cardboard boxes, or paper yard waste bags.
