Love is in the air on Valentine’s Day on Friday, but there is also quite the chill, meteorologically speaking.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has continued extreme cold warnings for much of the west-central, Interlake and northern regions in Manitoba.
The weather agency said to expect wind chill values of -40 or colder at times in the south and even colder in the north, mainly overnight.
Winnipeg and the rest of the southeast are not under the warning on Friday, but the cold snap is not over yet for the region.
ECCC also ended the warning for much of southwest early Friday afternoon, including Brandon.
Warning or not, daytime highs across the south are forecast to reach between -17 C and -20 C with a mix of sun and cloud on Friday afternoon. Those temperatures are well below normal for this time of year.
Sky conditions are more mixed across the north with sunshine in the northwest, a mix of sun and cloud in the northeast, and snow in the most northern areas.
Daytime highs for most northern regions are forecast to reach the mid-minus 20s on Friday afternoon.
ECCC said a weak low pressure system pushing south out of Nunavut will bring flurries to much of northern Manitoba on the weekend, at times.
Meanwhile, in the south, cold overnight lows in the mid-minus 20s and 30s will return on Friday night.
The current cold snap will continue in Winnipeg right through the Louis Riel Day long weekend and the first half of next week before some relief around Thursday.
