Chilly, below-normal temperatures persist on Wednesday in Winnipeg and southern Manitoba, but some relief is on the way.

A disturbance bringing warmer air is west of Manitoba, but it is on its way. Until then, daytime highs Wednesday will remain below normal, between -10 C and -13 C in most southern areas.

Morning sunshine has been replaced by cloudy skies in Winnipeg. There is the chance a few flurries will reach the city and surrounding regions by this afternoon. The odds increase this evening.

Light snow is expected Wednesday afternoon from Dauphin and Swan River to The Pas and Flin Flon. Flurries are likely in Lynn Lake and in Norway House.

Northeastern regions and northwestern Ontario will see sunshine or a mix of sun and cloud.

As the warmer air gets closer to Manitoba, temperatures will rise slightly overnight Wednesday across the south. By Thursday afternoon, daytime highs will swing above normal, close to the freezing mark.

It will be a brief break from the cold—a low developing over Alberta on Thursday will send temperatures falling in southern Manitoba on Friday. Winnipeg is forecast to reach -2 C in the morning, before plummeting to around -14 C in the afternoon.

The low will also bring snow to central and northern regions starting on Thursday through the end of the week, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Overnight lows Friday will drop back into the -20s across the south, ahead of a cold end to February on Saturday and start to March on Sunday.

Sunday is also the first day of meteorological spring, the months of March, April and May. It will miss the memo by one day—much warmer air returns on Monday.
