Three women and a man charged in $126K drug bust on Manitoulin Island

Police in Wiikwemkoong have charged three women from the community and a man from southern Ontario with drug trafficking and other offences following a police raid May 1.

Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service executed a search warrant, seizing drugs believed to be cocaine, crack cocaine, fentanyl, and prescription pills, with an estimated street value exceeding $126,000.

“Officers also seized over $20,000 in Canadian currency and two handguns, including one loaded firearm,” police said in a news release.

Also taking part in the operation were the Ontario Provincial Police emergency response team, community street crime unit, and the UCCM Police Service K9 unit.

Puts community safety at risk

“The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service remains committed to aggressively targeting drug trafficking and the presence of illegal firearms within the community,” police chief Ron Gignac said in the news release.

“Individuals involved in the distribution of drugs or possession of illegal weapons can expect a coordinated, intelligence-led response involving multiple policing partners. These activities place the safety of the community at risk and will not be tolerated.”

Charged is a 41-year-old female, a 21-year-old female, and a 38-year-old female from Wiikwemkoong, as well as an 18-year-old male from Scarborough.

They face several drug trafficking and weapons offences, as well as possession of property obtained by crime.

All accused were held in custody pending a bail hearing.

“Additionally, a 27-year-old female was arrested and released on an undertaking with a future court date, charged with obstruct(ing) police,” the release said.
