Interlake region to receive over $1M for community projects: province

Programs for seniors, veterans and youth in Manitoba’s Interlake region are getting some funding help from the province.

Over a dozen community projects in the Interlake region will receive a portion of just over $1 million from the province to support seniors, veterans and youth in the area.

Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard made the funding announcement on Friday at the Gordon Howard Centre in Selkirk — which has been approved for $100,000 in facility upgrades.

The projects are being supported through the Ground Up — Safe Healthy Communities for All, a provincial grant program for non-profit organizations, municipal governments and community councils to support community renewal efforts.

In 2025-26, 20 organizations in the Interlake have been approved for funding under the program, according to a provincial spokesperson.

“We believe in supporting these types of projects to have a broad scope outside of the Perimeter (Highway), to be able to deliver for communities,” Simard said.

“And this is a core belief that we’re one Manitoba, that we work together, we look after each other and allowing people to actively age, and the work that they’re doing here at the Gordon Howard, I just think it’s commendable.”

Lee Hanson, executive director of the Gordon Howard Centre, said the funds will help purchase new furnaces, a new air conditioning unit and flooring for three multi-use rooms.

“Our furnaces are over 30 years old, so the timing couldn’t have been better,” Hanson said. “This is fantastic news for our organization.”

Other recipients in the Interlake region who will be receiving funding through the program include $50,000 for Madeline’s Closet Inc. in Teulon, $100,000 for Petersfield Curling Club and $40,100 for the Arborg and District Multicultural Heritage Village.

The provincial grant program will see over $12 million invested in more than 200 community development projects across the province in 2025-26.

A provincial spokesperson said community projects approved for funding in other regions will be announced over the next several months.
