MADD launches new campaign to bring end to impaired driving

MADD is wanting people to be aware of impaired driving on Manitoba roads this summer.

Manitoba’s chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is reminding people about the importance of informing authorities about impaired drivers on the road.

The organization launched its 911 Campaign on Tuesday, with the goal of getting people to call 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.

MADD was joined by the family of Jordyn Reimer, who was killed by an impaired driver in 2022.

“Impaired driving kills,” Karen Reimer, Jordyn’s mother, said. “It devastates families, it devastates friends, it devastates communities. We ask the public to remember all of the innocent lives that have been destroyed by impaired driving.”

Trevor Ens, board chair of MADD’s Manitoba chapter, said it’s important for people to report suspected impaired driving when they see it.

“It’s no different than if you’re reporting any other crime in progress,” he said.

According to RCMP, there were 65 fatal crashes in rural Manitoba in 2024 that resulted in 75 deaths. Of those crashes, 28 per cent were alcohol or drug-related.

Winnipeg police said so far in 2025, they’ve intervened in over 250 impaired driving related incidents, many of which were reported by the public.

“Please, do not minimize that a vehicle is a serious weapon in the hands of an impaired driver,” Reimer said. “Do not minimize this.”
