CTV News declares Liberal Rebecca Chartrand takes Churchill-Keewatinook Aski from NDP

From orange to red, Churchill-Keewatinook Aski has flipped.

CTV News declares Liberal challenger Rebecca Chartrand has beat out the NDP’s Niki Ashton.

Ashton had previously held the seat since 2008.

2021 Federal Election

Niki Ashton won her fourth term as MP for the riding in 2021, winning 42.6 per cent of the vote. Ashton has represented the riding since 2008.

History

The riding was created in 1933 following the dissolution of the Nelson riding.

The riding has been represented by multiple parties over the years, including the Liberals (1935-1945, 1949-1957, 1993-1997, and 2006-2008), the Progressive Conservatives (1957-1979), and the NDP (1979-1993 and 1997-2006).

Elijah Harper, known for his role in the rejection of the Meech Lake Accord, previously represented the riding from 1993 to 1997.

Boundaries

The riding includes all of Northern Manitoba, including Churchill, Thompson, Flin Flon, The Pas, and multiple First Nations.

Demographics

The riding has the largest percentage of First Nations people living in Canada (61.1 per cent) as well as the highest number of Cree speakers in Canada.

The population has dropped to 81,258, according to the 2021 census, down from 86,908 reported in the 2016 Census.
