Pedestrians and drivers in downtown Winnipeg will notice a change at some intersections.

The city has implemented leading pedestrian intervals (LPI) at approximately 100 intersections downtown. Pedestrians will see a walk signal five seconds before drivers travelling the same way get their green light.

The goal is to make pedestrians more visible in intersections to reduce vehicle-pedestrian collisions.

The LPIs are part of Winnipeg city council’s road safety plan.

Drivers are reminded to pay attention to the signals and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
