A Portage la Prairie man is facing charges in connection with a double homicide in the city last year.

Manitoba RCMP said Jeremy Whincup, 54, was charged Wednesday with two counts of second-degree murder in connection with the killings.

This follows the January arrest of 30-year-old Preston Whitford from Portage la Prairie, who also faces two counts of second-degree murder.

The charges stem from an incident on Dec. 1. Police previously said they were called to a home on Oak Bay in Portage la Prairie at about 10:30 p.m.

They arrived to find a 42-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman dead.

The major crimes service deemed the incident a double homicide. Investigators said the victims were in a relationship, and believed the killings were targeted.

Days later, police released a potential timeline surrounding the killings. Officers said the night the bodies were discovered, two people exited a maroon SUV and went inside a home on Oak Bay.

A short time later, both people left the residence and sped off in the SUV. RCMP said these two people were suspects in the investigation.

None of the allegations have been tested in court.
