Trio of stabbings keep Winnipeg police busy over weekend

Winnipeg police had their hands full this weekend with a trio of stabbings and several other unrelated incidents.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m. Friday, officers were called to a convenience store on Dale Boulevard in the city’s Westdale neighbourhood.

They found a 36-year-old man who had been stabbed in the upper body and provided him with emergency care. He was taken in stable condition to hospital, where he underwent surgery.

At around 10:20 p.m., police stopped a vehicle on Norlorne Drive and arrested four people without incident. A machete that police believe was used in the assault, as well as an air pistol, werefound inside the vehicle.

Police said the victim and suspects got into an argument at the store prior to the attack. The suspects left but returned shortly after and assaulted the victim with a machete.

A 15-year-old teenage boy from Winnipeg is facing charges of aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a weapon, two counts of failing to comply with a sentence, and two counts of failing to comply with conditions of an undertaking. He was detained in custody.

A 20-year-old man from Garson, Man. is facing two charges of possession of a weapon. He was released on an undertaking.

23-year-old hospitalized after stabbing

Earlier Friday evening at approximately 8:30 p.m., police were called to a business on Maryland Street near Notre Dame Avenue.

A 23-year-old man had been stabbed several times and was taken to hospital in unstable condition after officers provided emergency care. He was later upgraded to stable condition after undergoing surgery.

Police said the major crimes unit is investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

Robbery suspect arrested

A 43-year-old man is behind bars following a string of robberies dating back to late January.

On Saturday afternoon, police said he robbed a Main Street store at knifepoint and took off with an undetermined amount of money. He was arrested outside the business without incident.

The major crimes unit took over and linked the suspect to several other incidents.

Police said he was responsible for multiple armed robberies or attempted robberies at commercial businesses on Main Street, Henderson Highway and Lakewood Boulevard between Jan. 27 and Feb. 21.

He also attempted to steal a woman’s vehicle on Feb. 21. Police said he approached the woman getting into her parked car on Henderson Highway and jumped into the passenger seat. She was able to escape, and he ran away on foot after unsuccessfully trying to start the car.

The Winnipeg man is facing seven counts of robbery, one count of theft under $5,000, and two counts of failing to comply with conditions of a release order. There was also a warrant out for possession of property over $5,000 under the federal Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. He was detained in custody.

Suspected truck thief leads police on foot chase

On Saturday evening, officers spotted a man sitting in a stolen Chevy Silverado on Linden Avenue near Henderson Highway.

The truck had been stolen from the area of Tecumseh Street and William Avenue on March 3.

Police said the suspect tried to run away but was arrested a short time later by officers. They learned he was not wearing an ankle monitor required by conditions of a release order.

A 58-year-old man is charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, mischief under $5,000, and several failures to comply with probation and release orders. He was detained in custody.

Wellbeing check leads to drug trafficking arrests

Two men are facing drug trafficking charges after they were found hiding in an apartment suite during a wellbeing check on Saturday night.

Police said officers were called to an apartment building on Kennedy Street to check on a female youth. They found the girl safe and uninjured.

However, the officers also located two men – aged 38 and 41 – hiding inside the same suite near a black bag containing around 248 grams of cocaine worth about $24,600, along with $400 in cash. The two men were arrested without incident.

The two men are facing drug-related charges.

The 41-year-old also had warrants out for failing to comply with a release order and careless storage of a firearm.

Both men were detained in custody.

Man stabbed by group of people on Portage Avenue

Early Sunday morning around 4 a.m., officers responded to an apartment suite on Young Street for reports of a stabbing.

They found a 28-year-old man suffering from several stab wounds. Officers provided emergency care including the application of a chest seal. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery.

The major crimes unit took over the investigation and learned the victim was attacked by a group of people in the 600 block of Portage Avenue. Police said they stabbed him with an edged weapon before leaving the area.
