Western Manitoba hit with majority of snow, more still expected

Don’t put your snow shovel away just yet - a low pressure system over the Dakotas continues to spread snow into Manitoba.

Since snow began to fall on Tuesday, higher amounts appear to have fallen west of Winnipeg so far.

Volunteer precipitation observers with the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) recorded just over 20 cm in Miami, 16.5 cm in Portage la Prairie, and 14 cm in Waldersee by early Wednesday afternoon.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), warmer air, which helped produce freezing rain, may have reduced overnight snowfall totals in the south.

Still, the weather agency has continued a yellow warning for snowfall Wednesday for Winnipeg and much of southern Manitoba.

ECCC said after a long period of snowfall, widespread totals of 15-25 cm are still expected within the warned region.

The heaviest snow will fall along the Manitoba escarpment and the higher terrain of the Parkland region, where snowfall totals could reach 30 cm, according to the weather agency.

ECCC said snow will taper off on Thursday morning.
