A Winnipeg man who walks every day through the city will hit a major milestone on Tuesday.

Jared Brown laced up his shoes to walk from the Perimeter Highway to The Forks. He began walking five years ago as a way to pass the time during the COVID-19 pandemic, but Tuesday’s walk was special.

He raised more than $19,000 for Cancercare Manitoba in honour of his girlfriend who was diagnosed with cancer last November.

“She’s back at work now and still has, obviously, a long road ahead, but we’re hoping that they’ve caught it early enough that she can get through it and still have many good years ahead of her,” Brown said, adding he tries to walk at least 10 kms everyday.

Brown initially had a goal of $1,825 for Tuesday’s jaunt to The Forks, which represents a dollar for every day he walked in five years. By Tuesday afternoon, he raised ten times that amount.

A small group of supporters joined in to walk with Brown Tuesday, which he called inspiring.

“I think for a lot of people, if I can maybe motivate them to just go for a small walk each day themselves, that’d be amazing,” he said.
