A Winnipeg woman has been charged after police say she stole thousands from her employer over the course of a year using forged invoices and receipts.

The Winnipeg Police Service was contacted in April 2024 about a potential fraud at a commercial business in the 900 block of Powell Avenue. Officers declined to provide details on the business, citing privacy concerns.

The financial crime unit began investigating and identified a female suspect, who was an employee at the business.

Police allege she used her position to fraudulently steal $95,000 using forged invoices and receipts, depositing the money into her personal bank account.

Investigators say this went on between May 2023 and April 2024.

Officers say the suspect turned herself in to police on Wednesday and was arrested without incident.

Police would not confirm to CTV News Winnipeg whether she was questioned about the alleged fraud prior to her arrest.

A 47-year-old woman from Winnipeg is facing a charge of fraud over $5,000 and use of a forged document.

She was released on an undertaking.

The charge has not been tested in court.
