Woman charged after stolen truck strikes officer, crashes into school bus

A Winnipeg woman is facing nine charges after a stolen five-ton truck struck an RCMP officer and collided with a school bus during a roughly two-hour chase earlier this month.

RCMP say they were notified at 9:35 a.m. on May 7 that a five-ton truck had been stolen from a business on Paramount Road in Winnipeg. The vehicle was seen heading south on the West Perimeter Highway.

Officers located the truck and attempted a traffic stop near the intersection of Roblin Boulevard, where the vehicle initially came to a stop. The truck then began moving again, according to a news release, striking an officer and damaging a parked police cruiser before fleeing the scene.

First aid was provided to the injured officer until EMS arrived.

Police then followed the truck as it approached Oak Bluff. An attempt to deploy a spike belt failed when the driver swerved into a ditch and onto a service road. The truck then collided with a short bus at the intersection of Highway 2 and Macdonald Road, Mounties said.

No students were on board and no injuries were reported.

The driver fled again and police lost sight of the vehicle.

Shortly after, RCMP received a report of a suspicious person walking in a field near the intersection of Road 50 North-East and Macdonald Road, southwest of Oak Bluff in the Rural Municipality of Macdonald.

Officers arrested the woman— who was identified as the driver of the stolen truck—at approximately 11:15 a.m. The stolen vehicle was subsequently found behind a shop on a nearby property off Macdonald Road.

A 42-year-old from Winnipeg faces numerous charges, including assault on a police officer with a weapon causing bodily harm, impaired operation causing bodily harm, theft of a motor vehicle over $5,000, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. She has been remanded into custody.

The injured officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is recovering at home.
