A new Fredericton middle school will be built on part of the New Brunswick Provincial Exhibition Ground with a price tag close to $100 million. The New Brunswick government says the project, which was approved in the 2026-2027 capital budget, will cost $96.78 million. The City of Fredericton council voted to expropriate the Exhibition Ground for the school and housing earlier this year. Construction will start in 2027-2028 with an opening date sometime in 2030-2031. The new school will replace George Street Middle School, which currently hosts 741 students in Grade 6 to 8. “The current school has served the community for over a century,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Claire Johnson in a news release. “We are committed to making sure that students have what they need to succeed. Through this project, students will benefit from a modern, accessible learning environment designed to meet their needs today and into the future.” The future school will have an enrolment of 810 students and will be about 50 per cent bigger than George Street Middle School. It will feature: The project will have $13.8 million for the planning and design work in the 2026-2027 fiscal year. For more New Brunswick news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
