A dog that survived a fall from a tall cliff at a popular Nova Scotia park is back with his family after local firefighters used ropes to raise him back up. The Kings County Rope Rescue Team — comprised of members from the Canning, Port Williams, Kentville and New Minas fire departments — was called to Blomidon Provincial Park in the Annapolis Valley on Sunday. The Canning and District Volunteer Fire Department says the incident happened roughly 2.5 kilometres in the woods on the Lookout Loop off the Jodrey and Woodland trail system. According to the fire department, the cliffs at that particular location are roughly 170 metres from the top to the beach down below. Canning firefighters used their drone to find the dog, who had fallen about 21 metres and landed in some bushes at the top of a talus slope. “A lowering to beach option was not viable due to the extremely unstable and overgrown condition of the talus slope,” said Canning and District volunteer fire chief Jeff Skaling in a Facebook post about the rescue. The rope rescue team instead lowered two people to secure the dog and then raised them all back up the side of the cliff. The fire department says it took about five hours from the time the rescue team was paged to the time all members were safely out of the woods. “Huge thank you to all members that participated in this rescue, and to Blomidon Park Staff who assisted as well,” said Skaling in his post. “We are very happy Reese was reunited with his family. Good Job everyone.” For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page
