Politicians on Prince Edward Island are gathering Tuesday for the first sitting of the legislature in a newly restored building. Province House closed for repairs in 2014, and the legislative chamber was moved down the street to the Honourable George Coles Building in Charlottetown. The building, which had its first legislative session in 1847, officially reopened last month. Premier Rob Lantz says it marks an important moment for the province and its democracy. “This building has been part of our country’s history for generations, and it is fitting that the work of representing Islanders will once again take place here,” he said in a statement on Tuesday. “My government is ready to get back to work and continue taking action on the priorities that matter most to Islanders.” The statement adds the fall sitting will focus on improving access to health care, addressing affordability, strengthening energy security and land protections. Islanders can attend legislative proceedings in the public gallery during the following hours: Proceedings are also broadcasted live online.
