A farmer on Prince Edward Island made a surprising discovery during potato harvesting operations. On Tuesday around 10 a.m., East Prince RCMP said officers responded to a call in North Bedeque for an object believed to be an old explosive device that was unearthed and collected in potato harvesting equipment. The item was found in a field near Slemon Park. Police said officers attended the scene, secured the area and contacted the Department of National Defence (DND) for assessment. “Any time you come across an object that appears to be an explosive device, do not touch or move it. Move to a safe distance and contact police immediately,” said Cpl. Gavin Moore. “We treat every report seriously and respond as though there is a genuine risk of explosion. Specialized personnel are then engaged to ensure the item is safely assessed and disposed of.” Police said late Tuesday afternoon, the item was retrieved by trained personnel from DND and taken for disposal. “Although these incidents are uncommon, possibly dangerous items are occasionally discovered in Prince Edward Island.” For more P.E.I. news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
