Barrie seeking artists to beautify traffic cabinets

In an effort to reduce graffiti, the City of Barrie is hoping to wrap traffic cabinets with chosen artwork from local artists.

The City and the Barrie Public Art committee are seeking art submissions from Ontario-based artist as part of its ‘Cabinets to Canvas’ program.

Artists are encouraged to submit family and community-friendly work that can be adapted for reproduction on a utility box or traffic cabinet.

‘Reflections of Home’ is the theme for the 2026 Cabinets to Canvas program. Select traffic cabinets around the city are already currently work from local artists as part of the City’s Graffiti Abatement Program. The program uses enforcement and educational initiatives to reduce graffiti, and according to the City, foster civic pride by displaying local artists’ talents.

Those interested in seeing their work displayed are invited to visit a virtual information session on May 12.

Proposals are due by May 22.

Submissions will be reviewed by members of the Barrie Public Art Committee and City staff.

Winning artists will be compensated for their work and artwork will go on display this fall.
