South Simcoe Police are seeing an increase in reports involving fraudsters impersonating telephone companies. The scammers offer fake promotions for free or discounted phones, tablets and other electronic devices. In these scams, victims receive calls from people claiming to represent companies such as Rogers or Fido. The caller may offer a special promotion and arrange for devices to be delivered to the person’s home. After delivery, the scammer will claim there is a problem with the order or device, and instruct the victim to return the items or arrange for someone to collect them. People may later discover unauthorized charges on their accounts, while the devices are no longer in their possession. “These scams can appear very convincing. The public is reminded to take time to independently verify any unexpected promotion before providing information, accepting devices, or returning them. A legitimate looking caller ID does not mean the call is genuine, as phone numbers can be spoofed,” South Simcoe Police stated in a press release. South Simcoe Police remind the public to: If you believe you have been targeted, contact your phone company directly and report the incident to police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. The South Simcoe Police Service encourages the public to share this warning with family, friends, and neighbours.
