Georgian Village getting new pickleball court this spring

Older adults in Penetanguishene will soon have a new place to play one of the world’s fastest-growing sports as a new pickleball court will soon be built at Georgian Village.

The construction is being made possible thanks to a one-time funding grant from the federal government’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.

“Pickleball is a fast-growing sport known for its accessibility and low-impact nature, making it especially popular among older adults,” said the County of Simcoe in a Monday news release. “It offers a great aerobic workout, improves balance and coordination, and encourages social interaction, all vital components of aging well.”

The county plans for the new court to be a hub for physical activity, mentoring and community connection, and will be the site of volunteer-led lessons and events. There will also be bench seating for those who prefer to watch.

“This is a very exciting project for Georgian Village,” said Warden Basil Clarke in the news release. “Pickleball is more than just a sport, it’s a way to bring people together, celebrate active living, and strengthen community connections. I look forward to celebrating the grand opening in the spring and excited to continue to offer more programs and supports for all our residents. Thank you to the Federal Government for supporting this initiative.”

The county expects the court to be open by the spring of 2026.
