Off-duty Barrie Police officer allegedly threatened by armed man

An off-duty Barrie Police officer was walking down the street with his partner when he was allegedly threatened by an armed man with an edged weapon.

On Tuesday around 2 p.m., the Barrie Police Communications Unit was notified by the off-duty officer about the alleged incident that took place along Clapperton Street near Worsley Street in Barrie.

Officials say the off-duty officer updated the team on his whereabouts until responding officers were able to arrive.

Police say they arrested the suspect at the intersection of Bayfield and Dunlop Street and took him to Barrie Police Headquarters where the investigation continued under the direction of detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division.

The man, a 39-year-old from Barrie, has been charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He is scheduled for a bail hearing.
