Paddle boarder swept further into Kempenfelt Bay, marine unit deployed for first time this season

A paddle boarding woman, 28, in distress was rescued by Barrie police as they deployed their Marine Unit for the first time this season.

Officers were called to Minet’s Point Park on Sunday and say they saw a woman on a paddle board in the middle of Kempenfelt Bay, continuously being pulled out further by the strong currents.

They also saw her falling from the paddleboard into the water multiple times. Police say a witness told them it looked like the woman was trying to kite surf for more than two hours.

The marine team of officers went out and got her and were able to safely bring her back to shore.

It turned out the woman was visiting from Nova Scotia. While in good health, police say she seemed a little exhausted. Following a safety chat with officers, she said no to medical attention and went on her way.

As the weather warms up and conditions are conducive to boating, Barrie police are reminding the public to check the weather and water conditions before heading out and ensure they have the right safety equipment.
