Tay Township council corks plan to allow public drinking outdoors

Tay Township council has voted against “bring your own” alcohol permits at community and outdoor public events.

During Wednesday night’s meeting, members ratified a recommendation directing staff to deny any requests to designate outdoor public events connected to a “bring your own” alcohol permit.

Council also confirmed to CTV News that it does not support the permit within the township. The motion was moved by Councillor Sandy Talbot and seconded by Councillor Judy Larmand.

This decision comes after the Ontario government announced in March that it would expand “bring your own” alcohol event permits (formerly known as tailgate permits) as part of an effort to support tourism and boost local economic growth.

Under the change, adults 19 years of age and older will be allowed to bring their own booze to outdoor events, as long as the municipality along with the Alcohol Gaming Commissions of Ontario has signed off on it.

A staff report presented to Tay Township council dated back to May 13 outlined the changes. Council ultimately decided not to move forward.
