Two more days of highs near 30 C today and Friday in Edmonton. Saturday’s still looking warm... but back to the low 20s. THEN...get ready for a super soaker: A few days of heavy, steady rain are on the way for Sunday/Monday (and possibly Tuesday). It should be a dry day in Edmonton today. Showers and thunderstorms will develop in the foothills and possibly in east-central Alberta once again. A few of those storms may turn severe, producing large hail and 70-90 km/h wind gusts. But, we’re not expecting any of that to move into the Edmonton region. Friday’s primary thunderstorm risk (possibly severe storms) will be northwestern Alberta. Some showers and storms will bubble up west of Edmonton in the afternoon and then track north into the Peace Country and the High Level region late afternoon/evening. There’s a chance we might see a shower or thunderstorm IN the Edmonton region late Friday, but the risk looks fairly low at this point. The upper ridge (that bubble of heat aloft that’s been responsible for this week’s heat) shift further east this weekend and it looks we’ll have an upper low move in over Alberta/Saskatchewan. AND...with that strong ridge hanging over Manitoba, the upper low will get stuck and dump rain on central and north-central Alberta. This is setting up to be a several-day event with heavy rain that could lead to some localized flooding. It’s still early, but 70-120mm of rain is possible Sunday-Tuesday. So, Saturday looks like it’ll still be dry through the daytime hours, but breezy. Sunday/Monday will be soaked, cool and gusty. Here’s the forecast for Edmonton and area: Today - Partly cloudy.
