London man accused in string of fires causing $62K in damages

Charges have been laid after after fire engulfed three vehicles, damaged a fourth, and also damaged the porch and fence of a home, and a recycling bin.

Around 12:20 a.m. on Tuesday, police and London fire crews were called to multiple reports of fires in the areas of Empire Street, Mornington Avenue, and Connaught Avenue.

According to police, between approximately 12:20 a.m. and 12:40 a.m., several fires were located and video surveillance obtained during the investigation captured a man pouring gasoline at another residence, indicating further attempts to ignite additional fires.

Investigators were able to identify and locate the suspect around 3:30 a.m.

A 34-year-old man from London has been charged with two counts of arson – disregard for human Life, three counts of arson causing property damage, possession of incendiary material, and mischief under $5,000.

At the time of his arrest, police said the accused was also wanted on multiple outstanding charges, including offences involving violence and breaches of court-imposed conditions.

The total estimated damage is approximately $62,000. At this time, investigators say they have not identified any connection between the accused and the impacted properties or victims.
