Timeline of Honda’s evolution in Alliston, Ont., in the wake of latest EV plans

In the wake of Honda “indefinitely” pausing its nearly $15 billion electric vehicle (EV) plans in Alliston, Ont., the automaker says it remains committed to operations in Simcoe County, stating the decision does not affect current jobs at the facility.

Despite the first-ever US $2.7 billion full-year loss, Honda states its “flexible manufacturing approach” remains a “hallmark of the company,” supporting 40 years of continuous production in Canada and the future of the local plant.

“Honda has long been a valued partner and one of our community’s most important employers. We recognize the significant role that Honda plays in supporting local jobs and our communities,” said Simcoe County Warden Basil Clarke in a statement to CTV News. ”We are grateful that Honda has reaffirmed its commitment to continued operations at its existing facility in Alliston."

Warden Clarke says the County of Simcoe continues to work with all industry partners and pursue every opportunity to attract investment, create good jobs and build a stronger economic future for residents.

Here’s a timeline of moments highlighting Alliston’s continuous role in Honda’s history:

1969 - 1987

Honda entered the Canadian market in 1969, initially focused on motorcycles and power equipment. Its move into automobiles made way in 1973 with the introduction of the Honda Civic, which gained traction for its fuel efficiency during the global oil crisis.

According to the automaker, in 1974 Honda’s CVCC engine was made, which allowed vehicles to meet strict emissions standards without needing a catalytic converter.

1986 - 1999

A major milestone followed in 1986 with the opening of Honda’s manufacturing facility located at 4700 Industrial Pkwy in Alliston, the first Japanese automotive plant in Canada.

Production kicked off in 1988 with the three-door Civic.

Throughout the 1990s, Honda expanded production to include luxury vehicle models with Acura. The company also reached a significant sales milestone in 1991, selling its one-millionth vehicle in Canada.

By the end of the decade, the company says it introduced the Insight, North America’s first gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle.

2000 - 2017

In the early 2000s, Honda continued expanding production in Alliston, adding models like the Acura MDX and Honda Pilot.

In 2008, Honda reported opening an engine plant that used recycled aluminum, reflecting a broader push toward sustainability. Later investments of more than $800 million put the Alliston facility as a global lead plant for the Civic.

By 2017, Honda noted producing eight million vehicles in the country.

2024 - 2026

In 2024, Honda announced plans to build the Canadian EV supply chain backed by a nearly $15 billion investment. The company also began producing the 2025 Civic Hybrid in Alliston, this was the first time the hybrid model was built in the country.

By May 2025, Honda announced it would delay the project for two years, with the company stating it needed to “examine where the EV market is” before deciding whether to move forward with the operation.

Today, the company shifted direction, pausing its EV expansion plans indefinitely, with a focus on reallocating more development and production resources into hybrid models which are currently in high demand.

Honda Canada says from here on out, the company will continue reviewing future procurement and business strategies while carefully monitoring market conditions.
