One person is in hospital after falling down a manhole Friday morning. At around 8:40 a.m., Calgary fire crews responded to a construction site in the 8000 block of 34 Avenue N.W. for reports of a construction worker who fell through a manhole. Arriving crews located the worker, who they say fell around 30 feet. Using air-monitoring equipment, firefighters initiated patient care, allowing the victim to stabilize while they made a plan to get them out. The department’s technical rescue team established a rope rescue system to retrieve the worker. Once the victim was safely packaged for transport, crews were able to use the rope rescue system to safely remove the worker from the manhole. The patient was transported by Alberta Health Services to hospital in stable condition. Investigation into what caused the incident is underway by Occupational Health and Safety.
