Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after a man was fatally shot by an RCMP officer in Brooks. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says officers went to a home in Brooks on the afternoon of July 15 to arrest a man believed to be connected to a break-and-enter that happened earlier in the day. A news release from ASIRT says another person answered the door and told officers the man they were looking for was inside. Police were eventually invited inside the home after several minutes. The watchdog says the suspect then came up from the back of the home, saw the officers and fled through a side door. He then ran toward a nearby alley with one of the officers following him. ASIRT says in the alley, the officer told the man to drop a knife he was holding. The man then ran toward the officer, who then fired their gun and hit the man. The release says officers provided first aid to the man until paramedics arrived, but he died at the scene. An examination of the scene revealed two knives, ASIRT said. The investigation is ongoing.
