Cavalry FC got a goal late from Owen Antoniuk, propelling them to a 2-1 victory over Forge FC at ATCO Field. The win leapfrogged Cavalry past Forge FC into first place. They lead Forge FC by two points, with Forge having a game in hand. Cavalry spent a lot of Saturday’s game trying to catch up after Forge FC jumped to a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. Ismael Oketokoun converted a setup from Nana Ampomah, who forced a turnover deep in Cavalry territory by Ali Musse. Cavalry FC stormed back, getting a number of scoring opportunities, including a breakaway by Cannigia Elva in addition to great chances by Dan Klomp and Amer Didic, but nothing went in. Late in the first half, in the 38th minute, Forge FC’s Rezart Rama earned a red card for committing an act of violent conduct, putting him out of the match. In the 63rd minute, Tobias Warschewski found Dan Klomp, who found the back of the net to knot the score at a goal apiece. In the 83rd minute, Harry Paton found Antoniuk at the edge of the box and Antoniuk found the top corner to give Cavalry FC a 2-1 advantage. In the 90th minute, a second red card was handed out to Forge FC’s Marko Jevremovic, reducing the club to nine players. “Delighted with the lads,” Cavalry coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. said after the game. “They knew what the job was and they went and done it.” Antoniuk, a former University of Calgary Dino, was still stunned by his game-winner at a post-game press conference. “You dream about that sort of big game, scoring,” Antoniuk said, “and (then) it goes in and you’re just like, alright, amazing!” Forge FC are back in action Wednesday, when they host FC Supra du Quebec in Hamilton. Cavalry FC host Atletico Ottawa next Saturday at 2:30 p.m. MT.
