Power outage due to weather affects 5 Airdrie schools

Five schools in the City of Airdrie were without power due to “weather-related incidents” on Monday.

Rocky View Schools said A.E. Bowers Elementary School, École Airdrie Middle School, École Edwards Elementary School, George McDougall High School and Muriel Clayton School were all affected by the outages, which lasted about two-and-a-half hours.

Officials said “teaching and learning continued” despite the issue.

The blacked-out schools were just one of the issues in the city north of Calgary on Monday.

Airdrie fire chief Mike Pirie said crews needed to assist several people who were trapped in elevators while there were two separate reports of smoke inside a residential complex on Tower Lane Drive and a business on Edmonton Trail.

No fire was found and no one was hurt in any of the incidents.

“Despite the challenging circumstances and concurrent nature of these events, Airdrie fire crews effectively managed all incidents with the assistance of mutual aid partners from Rocky View County Fire Services, including Engine 107 and Crossfield Fire Department, including Engine 154,” Pirie said in a statement.

The cause of the smoke-related incidents is still under investigation but is believed to be electrical in nature.
