Rainfall warnings remain in effect for the eastern half of Alberta and will likely stay in place until late Tuesday or early Wednesday. That warning includes the cities of Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary. Although it rained all day Sunday, rainfall totals in the Edmonton area were near the bottom end of the forecast range with roughly 20-25 mm recorded. The images below are the 24-hour rainfall accumulation imagery from the Carvel and Strathmore radars. You can see some heavier pockets in red to the east and southwest of Edmonton that received approx 50-80 mm of rain on Sunday and it appears the Breton/Warburg area (southeast of Drayton Valley) may have received around 100 mm. In Southern Alberta, 25-50 mm of rain hit the Red Deer area while Olds south through Calgary to High River had even more. (Note: the above radar images are for the 24-hour period from Sunday morning to Monday morning.) A deep area of low pressure continues to hang out over southeastern Alberta and it’s not going to move much over the next 24 hours. So, don’t expect conditions to change much today. We’ll be cool, cloudy and windy all day in the Edmonton area with periods of rain. That said, it looks like the rain may not be as constant as Sunday in Edmonton. We’ve had a bit of a break in the steadier rain overnight and early this morning and we may see a few more breaks in the rain (at times) today and this evening. So... if you’re heading to the Canada vs. Uzbekistan soccer match this evening, prepare for rain. But there IS a chance that it’s just cloudy, cool and gusty. Tuesday’s best chance for rain will be early in the morning. There could be showers or periods of rain in the city at any point during the day Tuesday... but the morning is the most likely time for some steadier rain. The pattern finally starts to break on Wednesday. Wind should ease, we’ll see some sunny breaks and temperatures up into the mid teens. By Thursday-Saturday, we’re back to highs around 20 C in the city. Here’s the forecast for Edmonton and area: Today - Cloudy with periods of rain. Wind: N 20-30 gusting 30-50 km/h.
